Interstate 5, State Highway 99, the Stockton Metropolitan Airport and the Port of Stockton provide easy access to major cities surrounding Stockton. The Port of Stockton is an inland seaport serving cargo vessels.

A German immigrant, Charles M. Weber, founded Stockton in 1849. Weber acquired over 49,000 acres through a Spanish land grant. He originally came to the area a year prior attempting to make his fortune in the Gold Rush, but soon realized that he could do well by serving the needs of the miners and their families. Weber named the city after Commodore Robert F. Stockton, who was instrumental in taking California from Mexico in 1846-47. Prior to its incorporation in July of 1950, the city of Stockton had also been known as Tuleberg and Mudville. Stockton became the first community in California to bear an American name, all others being of Spanish or Native American origin.
